Abstract

The article deals with remains of Sarmatian mammals found in diatomaceous marlstones and siltstones of a section at Bela Cerkev in Dolenjska, Slovenia. The section was uncovered in 2002 and 2003 in the northwestern border of Krka basin. The sequence of beds in the section is 25 m thick, and can be subdivided to five successive members differing in lithology, faunal contents and environment of deposition. In the base occurs the Badenian marly-carbonate marine member which is followed upwards by four Lower Sarmatian members. The first of the latter is the oncolitic-stromatolitic freshwater member which is followed by the dark grey to black marine-brackish mudstone member, then the marine-brackish yellowish-brown cerithian sandy member that passes into the about 15 m thick brachyhaline diatomaceous member. In the laminated diatomaceous siltstone of the last member was found the majority of bone remains belonging to dolphins of the family Acrodelphidae. Certain finds from the Bela Cerkev section are highly comparable with the dolphin bones found in Sarmatian beds of the Vienna basin.
