Ostanki morskega ježka v eocenskem apnenčevem peščenjaku pri Fiesi / The remains of a sea urchin in the Eocene calcareous sandstone at Fiesa, southwest Slovenia
Abstract
Discussed are remains of an irregular sea urchin in the Eocene calcareous sandstone from flysch beds at Fiesa on the Adriatic sea coast. These beds are exposed in a long outcrop between Strunjan and Piran. The find is outstanding with regardt to the extreme rarity of macrofossil remains in these sandstones. Such finds have not been known in Slovenia, and were also not expected in this case. After careful inspection and comparison of highly diverse polygonal plates and fossil remains in adjoining rocks we finally came to the conclusion that plates belong to the oral or ventral part of the major corona of a sea urchin of order Holasteroida, family Urechinidae, and genus Sanchezaster.
